Create A Successful Holistic Practice
Are You A Healer?
Do you have a sense that you want to do more than just have a job? Do you want to make a difference in the world? Well, great! You are on the right track because being a holistic professional is a calling. Being a member of the human race, we all have the potential to be healers, but making a living by helping others find their center, requires an intentional asking to be of Service. The focus of the holistic therapist is to guide the client towards taking control of their own health, and culturing personal awareness of their own needs and beyond.
Once we have asked for Guidance we will receive it and always be taken care of but there is some participation required. We still need business tools, coaching, and direction that will bring that “gift” to a successful level.
In·ten·tion· (in-tenshu-n) adj. Done deliberately; intended
Suc·cess (suk-ses)noun The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted: attributed their success in business to hard work. Dictionary.com
One of the most important questions you must ask yourself when choosing a career in holistic therapy is WHY? What is it that interests you? Why do you feel the draw to have a holistic practice? Having a practice that is guided by the heart is one of the most challenging and rewarding careers anyone could embrace.
Have A Heart?
Holistic means to let the body find balance or wholeness by itself. In my opinion, as a holistic practitioner, you are the client’s first touch and awareness that they have the potential to claim their own health from within. It is a big deal to know that you can influence someone toward a healthier better life just by being who you are. Being a Holistic Professional differs in perspective from the traditional medical model but there is a place for that model as well.
Holistic businesses can range from, nutritionists, massage and all bodywork, acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, chiropractic, yoga, meditation and so on. It’s all-good and it all works, just pick a path in the direction where your heart leads you!
Joseph Campbell, a well-known philosopher in our time, says, “Follow your Bliss.” You will need to because it will be the passion that gets you through the lean times. It is imperative that you understand this. You are making a living through your heart and this type of therapy requires passion. It also requires patience, and guidance from your Teachers and Mentors.
Holistic practice targets the interactive process of mind, body, emotions, and Spirit. If the therapist isn’t going toward that personal goal as well, they will find that their clientele will always be minimal, most people will not reschedule. Remember: Empathy not sympathy. Empathy is observing the problem and being able to facilitate as the professional. Sympathy is getting into the problem and either becoming part of it or becoming unable to be effective. As an example, when someone is drowning, we throw them a floating device instead of swimming out and grabbing them. That way both are saved instead of going down together.
There is a vast difference between working hard and hard work. You can make hard work out of the simplest task or settle into the belief that there is some endurance required to build your career. I also suggest that you find a mentor, coach, someone who can be there before you for advice and education. Be aware to honor that person as if you are honoring any holy person. This exchange of time and information will not only cut your learning curve, but knowing there is an Elder around to support you in times of doubt and growth, is important.
So, think about your goals, what direction you want to take and start asking the Universe for Guidance in your morning meditation and prayers. Give yourself a chance to digest and think about where you want to set your intentions. How will you be of Service?
